We highly recommend snow and ice guards on metal roofs, as sliding piles of snow from metal roofs could potentially cause injury if over driveways or walkways, and can easily damage and tear down even new gutters.
The two most common kinds of snow guards are snowbars and Snow Defender hooks. Both the snow bars and the snow hooks perform similar duties. Considerations include aesthetics, price, and drawbacks.
Snowbars, which are made of the same material as the metal roofing itself, are typically cheaper and somewhat less noticeable than the snow hooks. Drawbacks are, with a lot of surrounding trees, they can hold more leaves/debris on the roof, potentially causing rust.
Snow Defender hooks are made of powdered-coated steel, have higher price point, stand out a little bit more, are considered more robust, and tend to hold less leaves/debris on roofs.
Snow Defender 6500 - is designed for standing seam roofs and is the snow guard of choice for many roofers. It fits standing seams up to 3/8″ width and most 1″ through 1 3/4″ seam heights.
Snow Defender 4500 - is the snow guard you need for long-lasting protection against melting snow. Designed for use with exposed fastener panels on 2×4 purlins in the flat position. Allows snow to come off the roof in small pieces, while keeping it from sliding off all at once.
